Going to the Andover Transfer station on Saturday February 10, 2018 was a bit different for me. Usually in my hometown of Norwell, Ma, we have a garbage truck system that takes our trash and recycling. Andover is a smaller town and a transfer station seems necessary. As we were traveling around the whole site on a cold and slippery day, it was quite interesting to learn about this station. There were limited workers there (one who was a full time worker) and pretty much all the work was done by the locals. Visiting the station was cool to see where the Andover population gets rid of there trash and recycling. Photo taken by Myles Abbate As we got off the bus, We headed straight over to the incinerator to see where and what happens to the peoples trash. It was like a small opening with a metal hole where the trash is disposed and crushed up. It was controlled by one of the workers and once there was enough trash filled up, He would do his work and crush it up. The trash is then br...
Myles Abbate and Shashi Vivarelli site #5 Screenshot from google earth Photo credit Myles Abbate General Purpose: The purpose of this was to test the health of the Proctor pond and see the effect it has on the ecosystem of Proctor. If we couldn’t find anything biodiversity in the pond then that will conclude that the pond is unhealthy. As a class we were sampling biotic and abiotic things and help us determine the health and Biodiversity that is in the pond. Over the years of testing the pond, there has been changes that surround the pond like the turf fields, the freeze and amount of rainfall that has occurred the past couple of years. The water is being tested by us and we are analyzing it and seeing if there is differences or similarities between the past years. From the data we found and compared the pond is slightly declining throughout the years and I believe the pond will increase in the years coming. At Proctor Academy there is small yet fascinating pond that is on its campus. The pond is in the center of the campus next to Shirley hall, Slocumb hall and the Lovejoy Library. On an everyday basis I get to pass the pond but I've never gone in it or tested whats in it. Over the pass couple of cold days in October Shashi and I had the chance to test whats the water is like and see what living organisms are in it. On an early Tuesday morning around 9:05, Shashi and I set out to our site and test the proctor pond. We were given materials from Alan that included a spoon, a net, a little magnifying glass, a pipette, a sheet that had all different types of creatures on it, a bucket where we put all things we scooped up and a little container where we put the creatures we found in. We picked sites where we would test and our site was right next to Shirley hall. My first examination of the pond was that there was a lot of biotic factors that was in it. There were...
